Real Science

There are a number of impressive so-called "Amateur" scientific activities that are as sophisticated as "professional" research. In some respects the underlying motivation is substantially more altruistic than some of the latter, because the underlying motivation is not obtaining tenure, additional sources of funding, self-agrandisement, etc.

Amateurs are typically motivated by the sincerest of motivations, a thirst for knowledge and understanding. While paid scientists seek copyrights, patents and financial rewards for their work, the amateur freely discloses and shares his work.
